They spend it for themselves to look good and feel good about themselves. Let’s not pretend it’s for the guy they’re meeting. Do you really want to argue a Louis Vitton bag or pair of Jimmy Choos is for the guy’s benefit? Do women only wear makeup on dates and not at work? Women would have spent money on those things even if they were heading out for a girl’s night out. Women also get to amortize their costs over several dates. Even if they never hear from the guy again, the make-up, nails, and clothing can be used again and again on other dates. Contrast that with the guy’s costs for the evening. Those costs are good for that night and that’s it. If the woman never returns his calls again, all he has to show for it going forward is a credit card bill – there’s no amortizing the cost of dinners and drinks over several uses.
