It is, BTW, nearly backwards I think to claim the toolmaker as the alpha. In a pre- or proto-political environment, it’s not the toolmaker who becomes the boss but the strongman. Unless you assume that he who invents the tools is also the most adept at using them to dominate others. Like the ape-man at the beginning of 2001. Clever on screen but probably not true. The toolmakers are more natural betas.
I agree, but I’ll tell you a real chimp story almost like 2001. In one of the chip groups that Jane Goodall (I think) was studying, the chimps lived in close proximity to the researcher’s camp. There was one lower beta who discovered a new trick – that steel trashcans can make a lot of noise. He positioned himself uphill with the trash can, then came charging down into the group, rolling the can and beating on it and screaming and making a horrible racket. He scared all the other chimps so bad, even the alphas, that he became the new group alpha. A position he held on to for some time, if I recall.

Obviously true.

I feel like there are a lot of holes in the reasoning of this post. Starting with social circles:
I can’t think of a single group of friends I’ve had where some guy, or minority of guys, were clearly dominant. These are the guys that can get away with saying and doing all kinds of crazy shit that others in the group would not be tolerated for doing. These were also the guys who very clearly had first pick of the women.I recall similar complaints from many of my friends about their own social groups.
